Opelousas Catholic reigned supreme on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State baseball and softball teams.
After guiding Opelousas Catholic to its first Division IV select state baseball title, senior Mark Collins earned the LSWA’s Outstanding Player honors. His coach, Justin Boyd, was named Coach of the Year.
Collins, a UL baseball signee, batted .491 batting with one home run, 10 doubles, eight triples, 42 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He was the District 6-1A MVP. The Vikings defeated Glenbrook 10-0 in the Division IV final.
Boyd helped the school win its first state title as Opelousas Catholic, which was once known as Academy of the Immaculate Conception in Opelousas. In 1970, AIC won the second of back-to-back state championships. AIC merged with Holy Ghost School to become Opelousas Catholic.
Meanwhile, Opelousas Catholic's Cullen Matherne won softball Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to their first state championship.
Matherne, in his first year as coach, led Opelousas Catholic past District 6-1A Catholic-Pointe Coupee 1-0 in the championship game.
Montgomery’s Zoey Fitts was voted the Outstanding Player on the softball squad.
Fitts helped third-seeded Montgomery defeat No. 5 French Settlement 5-4 in the Division IV nonselect state title game. She batted .550 with 11 home runs, 58 RBIs, four steals and had .629 on-base percentage.
